Imagine living in a place of peace, healing, and education, working to bring about a vision you believe in, while experiencing the joys and hardships of life in southern Mexico. Here at Centro Nijo, we have space to accomodate two volunteers for long-term work and study; you can choose to stay for either a 3-month or 6-month term of service. Volunteers generally work flexible hours, with time every day for your own learning, healing, creative work—or just time to go to the beach.

In exchange for work, volunteers receive accomodation in our dormitory style Community House, meals, and the chance to participate in our weekly temazcal. Life at the ranch is communal, so we all share community tasks, learning to work together according to our desires and abilities. Volunteers need a basic level of Spanish, a cheerful and flexible attitude, and lots of initiative to tackle projects and bring them to fruition.

Each volunteer is contained under a different arm of the school—one works through the Centre of Alternative Medicine, and the other mainly with the School of Healing Arts. Although we have set volunteer positions, we welcome multi-skilled individuals with varied interests. Also, we are always open to new ideas and suggestions, and are flexible about the duties of our volunteers. If you want to study and teach, it’s an added bonus.

Additionally, we welcome volunteers for shorter projects—even if only for a day or a week, though we ask that you seek your own accomodation and meals. For more information about any of our volunteer opportunities, please EMAIL us.

UPDATE: We are currently unable to accomodate volunteers.

Apprentice Healer – Centre of Natural Medicine

More appropriately a work-study program than simple volunteering, our Apprentice Program lets you work with and shadow a Healer with over 25 years of experience, learning through daily, hands-on experience with patients in our Consultorio. When not in the Consultorio, you’ll be studying books on massage, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, qi-gong, anatomy, reiki, and all the topics contained in our ‘Awakening the Healer’ course.

Apprentices are responsible for cleaning the Consultorio daily, changing the sheets, answering the phone, greeting patients, and helping with non-profit activities like publicity. Additional duties could include: teaching with the School of Healing Arts, organic gardening, graphic or web design, organizing activities or workshops, building, and maintenance of the land or buildings.

English/Arts Teacher – School of Healing Arts

As an English/Arts teacher at the Centre, you’ll be teaching every day in our open air classroom. Work with local youth of all ages to design curriculum, activities, and teach classes. We are also interested in adding any other kind of creative workshops you may be able to teach, including sports, music, dance, visual art, theatre, and alternative arts such as martial arts, yoga, or meditation.

Additionally, we may ask you to organize, publicize, and teach outreach workshops in partnership with the local library or other civic organizations. Duties in addition to teaching will include flyering, community networking, designing new classes and curriculum, cleaning the school area, and helping out with daily chores and other administrative aspects of running the School and Centre.
